With the 10, 20, 30 plate filters, you can remove 5 plates, only, reducing the total size. However, more pads is always better for total volume thru-put. Pads are relatively inexpensive compared to the 1/2 hour or more that it takes to set up, acid rinse, flush, and empty with every new set of pads.
